Wedding Bells and Paying Bills

[ 0 ] February 16, 2011 |

I recently had the honor of standing up for one of my best friends, Amy, at her beautiful winter wedding. As I watched her walk down the aisle to her groom Mark, I thought about how special this moment and this day really were. As anyone who plans or participates in a wedding knows, there is a huge amount of planning that goes into making that day what it is – a celebration of two peoples’ commitment to each other, a declaration of one another’s love, and the start of a new life together.

As I was looking through all of the photos from Mark & Amy’s special day I began to think about all of the planning it took. Not just the wedding planning that takes place before the big day but the marriage plans that they must make for a shared life together. Each couple must make the best decisions for themselves during the wedding planning and the marriage planning.

Do you open joint checking accounts? Who will pay the mortgage or rent while the other pays for the groceries? These are all decisions that must be made and the sooner the better. Once you are married there are also a number of changes that will need to take place. Beneficiaries will need to be changed as well as life, auto, and home insurance policies to cover both of you. If she is changing her last name she will need to contact the Social Security office to start the process. Once her last name is changed she will need to get a new drivers license using her new Social Security card as well as update her name anywhere she has accounts or does business.

From wedding bells to paying bills it’s important to plan ahead!  Do you have any advice for the newly weds that I can pass along?

Congrats Mark & Amy!
