About Our Art…by John Madison

[ 0 ] January 12, 2015 |

John Madison was born and raised in Michigan, and moved to central Illinois when he was twelve. He has always loved art and drew extensively when young, but gave up on the craft after high school. In 2004, he picked up a drawing pencil and began what has turned out to be a fulfilling and enjoyable pastime, and potentially a career in fine art.

Since returning to drawing, most of his work was steeped in graphite and charcoal.  He felt before he could paint, he needed to re-learn how to draw again.  Nearly two years passed before he changed out his pencils for paintbrushes.

After much trial and error from each painting and learning from other artists, he eventually reached a level of realism and precision in paintings that will allow him to evolve further in his art.

John has accumulated some academic credits at Illinois State University and the Academy of Art University in San Francisco where for a brief time pursued an MA in painting. He finds inspiration from many other artists and has a great collection of North Light Books as well as several editions of Splash and Spectrum to satisfy his art cravings. Presently he is a member of the Transparent, Missouri, Pennsylvania and National Watercolor Societies; additionally holds signature status with the Illinois Watercolor society.

Watercolor is his primary passion. It possesses a transparency unrivaled by other mediums, its lightness and manipulative characteristics compel him as an artist.  His subject matter often centers on colorful and transparent objects easily complimented by natural light.  The majority of his recent work has been steeped in still-life arrangements, which allow him to control the lighting, and chose the objects that best reflect his representational style.
