2015 High School Art Scholarship

[ 0 ] April 13, 2015 |

The art from the contest is now on display in the IAACU lobby. It will stay on display through June 2015.

This was our first year running the High School Art Scholarship program and it was a great success. We want to thank all of the students who participated and teachers who encouraged their students to participate.

Our 2015 winner is Jalynne Zehr! Jalynne was able to get a total of 1,545 votes on Facebook for her owl piece titled “inquisitive eyes”. Jalynne is currently a senior at Normal Community and will be attending Heartland Community College this fall.  Some of you might also recognize her from her time as an intern for the COUNTRY Learning and Leading High School Intern program in 2014.

Jalynne has been drawing ever since she was able to hold a crayon. She didn’t get too serious with it until fifth grade at Sugar Creek when her teacher encouraged her to participate in a competition where they had to draw the school mascot. After winning it, her confidence rose and lead her to draw daily and even enroll in some art classes later on in both Jr. High and High School.

Her piece used for this contest was drawn spur of the moment and she based it upon several owl pictures she came across online. Using her favorite media, charcoal, she was able to draw this piece in about two hours. She loves drawing animals and likes creating realistic pieces. She hopes to major in art and further her education at Columbia in Chicago after two years at Heartland.

Jalynne’s art teacher, Jennifer Kelly also won an award!  Part of the Art Scholarship program is for the winning student’s teacher to receive a $250 gift card to an art supply store for her classroom!  Mrs. Kelly has been teaching at Normal Community for 16 years now and is a great inspiration to her students.

Congratulations Jalynne and good luck in your future endeavors!
